July 11, 2010
Franklin Twp
Box Area 4-4
Company 4 and Ambulance 2A were dispatched at 1215 hrs to the 5000 block of Chambersburg Rd for a brush fire. Company 4 dumped the station with B4 and the Captain (Six) w/2, E4-1 and the A/C (Markel) w/4, E4-3 w/1, and SQ4 w/1. Co 4 units observed a column of smoke as they turned onto Route 30 at the bottom of the mountain. B4 accessed a driveway at 4895 Chambersburg Rd and continued to investigate by foot.

Captain 4 located the fire about two hundred yards back along the wooded hillside with the only access being from the residential driveway. Companies 27 and 5 were requested to assist. E4-3 was directed to proceed up the driveway and meet up with B4. Crews deployed a 200' 1¾" crosslay through the woods and attached a gated wye with two 1" forestry lines which were extended about 400' each. E4-3 dropped 300' of 3" line to the end of the driveway and was supplied by E27.

Extinguishment and mop-up continued for several hours, requiring the response of additional companies and personnel so that crews could be rotated in and out due to the high temperatures. Units were available at 1655 hrs. The fire was estimated to be about ¾ acre in size. The PA Bureau of Forestry was on scene to investigate. Thanks to E22-2 (Barlow) for transferring to Company 4 during the incident.
